friendly people ... warm atmosphere ... good food

In particular, adventure activities are very popular, with the following to choose from:

  • Quad Biking – take a guided trip through the Namib Dunes, totaling 50km it is the ultimate way to experience the desert first hand.

  • Sand Boarding – grab a board and head out to conquer the dunes. Two options are available: stand up (like snow boarding) and lie down (flat on your stomach), so if you enjoy speed and don’t mind a bit of climbing, this is a good fun option.

  • Sky Diving  – If you need a rush, then this is for you! One of the best ways to experience the vastness of the desert is to see it from the air, plus the 30 second freefall in the tandem jump is an added thrill.

  • Dolphin Cruise – experience the beauty and variety of the sea life around Swakopmund and Walvis Bay as you take a boat cruise to search for the rich supply of birds, seals and dolphins that are found in these waters.

  • Scenic Flights – one of the best ways to see the desert and coastal dune belt is from a light aircraft. Several flights are available, offering a variety of destinations around Swakopmund.

  • Township Cultural Tour – if you fancy something a bit less energetic, take some time out to take a tour through the townships where you can experience some of the local ethnic culture, and sample the customs of the local people.

  • Day Tours – several day trips are available to the Moon Landscape, Welwitschias, Walvis Bay, the Sandwhich harbour and the Flamingoes.

Other options are to view some of the local landmarks and architecture, such as the Lighthouse (1902), the Jetty (1905), the Mole (1899), the railway station (Bahnhof, 1901), Woermannhaus (1905) and the Old Prison. All these buildings are well maintained and an indication of the interesting history of Swakopmund.

The town also has a Marine Aquarium, and a Snake Park.

Pubs and Restaurants are plentiful, and you can sample traditional German fare at several of the taverns and the Brauhaus, while seafood is also a popular choice. The Tug Restaurant offers excellent seafood, and is located right on the beach with an excellent view of the sunset. For an alternative sundowner option, check out the rustic Tiger Reef Beach Bar at the mouth of the Swakop River. In addition there are several action bars available, for those keen on a bit of socializing and reliving the day’s events.
Various styles of accommodation are also available, with some very fine hotels available. Camping facilities are available in town.
